Military Rites Held For Sgt. H. L Newman Funeral services were held Fri day at 11 a. m. in the Hopewell Baptist Church for Sgt, Hansel L. .Newman, whose body arrived in Murphy Thursday. A member of the Eighth In fantry Division, he was wounded July 5 and died July 9, 1945. in Xormandie. France. The Rev. Thomas Truett offi ciated and burial was in the church cemetery with military rites con ducted by the Joe Miller Elkins Post No. 96. American Legion of -Murphy. Surviving are the parents. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Newman of Cul berson: three brothers, T. L. and Jerry of Culberson and Cecil of Doraville, Ga. More than fifty people, including several high school athletes, met in the town hall here Monday night to discuss ways and means of securing lights i for the town's athletic field. W D. Whitaker, who presided lover the meeting, stated that there i already is on hand in excess of a thousand dollars in cash from funds of the Air Show here a year ago. The body voted to proceed at once with securing lights which would be ample lor football and softball, with the view of later getting lights for baseball. Dairy Calf Show To Be September 28 At a recent meeting of the Xantahala Grade Dairy Calf Show Committee it was decided to post pone the first calf show scheduled for September 2 until Wednesday. September 28. which will be dur ing the Cherokee County fair. The calves to be exhibited in this Show should be brought to the Cherokee County Fair Grounds on Tuesday. September 27. A. Q. Ketner says: "We are of the opinion that the date of September 28 will be much more convenient than September 2, since a large number of the farm en n Ch< rokec County who plan to exhibit calves in the Show will also be making exhibits at the County Fair." Tree Seedlings Available For Fall Planting There will be available from TV A a large number of Tree Seedlings for planting this fall and next spring in Cherokee and Clay Counties. There is a number of acres in both counties that could be profit ably planted to trees. Real steep and extremely poor land should be growing trees instead of lying idle Trees available are White Pine, Shortleaf Pine. Tulip Poplar, Black Locust and a limited amount of Red Cedar. Applications for trees to plant this Fall should be made at tihe County Agent's Office prior to November 1. J. M. Townsend Taken By Death Funeral services for Joseph Marion Townsend. uncle of Dave Townsend, local Murphy funeral director, were held Sunday after noon from the Old Union Baptist church at Young Harris, with the Rev. Henry Brown conducting the last rites in the presence of a large number of relatives and friends. Mr. Townsend passed away early Friday afternoon after a three day illness. Although in declining health for sometime, his death came unexpectedly. Survivors include: one daughter. Mrs. J. B. Souther of Young Har ris. Ga.; five sons. Gus. of Young Harris; John of Dublin, Ga.; Tom of Alma, Ga.; Andy of Portland, Oregon; and Walter of Klamath Falls, Oregon; one brother. George Townsend of Young Harris; 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grand children as -well as several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Grimsley will present a movie concerning Family Life, followed by a discussion. Visitor To Preach At Baptist Church The Rev. Colie Ferguson, pastor of Crossroads Baptist Church. Hartwell, Ga., will preach at First Baptist Church here Sunday morn jing at 11 o'clock and Sunday eve ning at 8 o'clock, in the absence of the pastor, the Rev. J. Alton Morris, who with his family is on vacation. Mr. Ferguson is a graduate of Furman University, Greenville. S. C\. and Southern Baptist Theologi cal Seminary, Louisville. Ky. Valley River Revival Ends A revival meeting was held at Valley River Baptist Church last j week with the Rev. T. D. Denny and the Revv. F. J. Sitton assist ing the pastor, the Rev. Robt. Barker. Fifteen were received by baptism and 12 by renewal during the revival. Th<? Rev. J. Alton Morris^ preached his 25th anniversary ser mon at First Baptist Church in .Murphy Sunday evening. He was ordained at M<t. Olivet Baptist Church. Hartwell, S. C.. on August 24. 1924. and he preached at that church Wednesday evening of this week. During his 25 years in the ministry, he has preached ap proximately 5.061 times, of which 4,536 were regular sermons. 175 ! marriage ceremonies, and 350 lunerals. He has baptised 500 people and has conducted 125 re vival* He has made 11.500 pas- ( toral calls. He was baptised at the age of 15. in August, 1918. and was call ed to preach at the age of 17. Vugust, 1920. He was licensed to preach at the age ol 20. August. I 1923. and ordained to preach one! year later. Mr. Morris was born on a farm in Hart County, Ga., near Hart- 1 well, on Aug. 16. 1903 the son of i Lily Wilson Morris and the late j Albert A Morris. Attending the schools of Hart County, he was graduated from , Hartwell High School in 1923. That fall he entered Mercer University, | Macon. Ga.. a Baptist institution. I and received his A. B. Degree j there in 1927. Mr. Morris was ordained as a j minister of the gospel at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, his home church, i near Hartwell, in August 24, 1924. i He had preached prior to his | ordination, and throughout the j years he was in school work he served a number of country church- 1 es as pastor. He was superintendent of Tuck- j er High School. Tucker. Ga.. in j 1927 and 1928, following which he | became superintendent of Winter ville, Ga., High School, practice school for the University of Georgia. He received his M. A. Degree from the University of Georgia in 1932. On July 11. 1933. Mr. Morris married Miss Gladys DeJournette. daughter of Mrs. Sarah DeJour nette and the late J. R. DeJour nette. in Athens Tenn. In the fall of 1933 he and his bride went to Louisville. Ky., where he entered Southern Bap tist Theological Seminary for (Continued on pase four) PASTOR? Rev J. A. Burger, v. ho has accepted a call as pastor j of Friendship No 2 and Sweet gum Baptist Churches. Pastor Is Called To Two Churches Friendship No. 2 and Sweetgum Baptist Churches have elected the Rev. J. A Burger as pastor, and he has ari ived to assume his duties. Mr. Burner is now engaged in a revival meeting at Sweetgum Church. Services are being held at 11 a. m. and 7:30 p m. daily. Mrs. Burger is conducting a Bible school from Flannel Board for the young people. This begins each evening at 6:45 and ends at 7:30. The new pastor is a former pas tor of these two churches. He served in 1934 and 1935 and since that time has been at Baptist Temple in High Point. 1950 Studebaker To Be Displayed The ne\s 1950 Studebaker will be shown at Evans Auto Co.. here on Monday. August 29. announces Tom Evans, manager, who recent ly saw the new cars at a dealers' meeting in Mew York Mr. and Mrs Rex Hall of Royal Oaks, Mich . were guests last week of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hyatt and Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Phillips. Seeding Demonstration To Be Given September 1 On Thursday, September 1, at 9:30 A. M., a complete pasture seedinig demonstration will be held at the old Truett Taibor farm at 1'eachtree, one mile north of Peach tree School on the Tomotla road. Four local farm machinery deal ers have agreed to have available from one to two tractors with i equipment to do the work of pre paring the land and doing the seeding. Also, demonstrated will be a new machine constructed for seeding clover and grasses. This is the first machine o<f this type that has ever been used in this section and by using this sipecially constructed marline, farmers can reduce the amount of seed neces sary for securing a stand, by 25 per cent. The purpose of this pasture seeding demonstration is to give Cherokee County farmers the ' correct and recommended method ' of seedilng a pasture. During this year the PMA office has furnished 1 Cherokee County farmers with enough seed to seed approximately 3000 acres of new pasture. Every ) farmer in Cherokee County its ! urgd to attend the demonstration. If the weather is unfavorable for field work it will be postponed until the following day, Friday, September 2. Revival Starts Here On Sunday First Methodist Church of Mur- ? phy will have a week of Spiritual Enrichment beginning Sunday. August 28 at 8 p. m. and continu ing through the week, concluding on Sunday evening. September 4 This meeting is interdenomina tional in its nature, therefore, all the Churches of Murphy are in vited to actively cooperate. Attendance Officer Says Children Must Enroll First Day Of School Mrs. Margaret LeMay Mauney. I visiting teacher and attendance of- i ficer of the Cherokee County schools, urges parents who will 1 (have children in school this fall to be making plans now to have I them attend the very first day. 1 She says that a parent who fails 1 lo enter his child on the opening I day or furnish the teacher with a j satisfactory statement explaining the failure of the child to enroll j will be indicted and fined. She reminds that absence from j school caused from visiting consti- 1 | tutes a violation of the compul- | sory attendance law. She requests farm families to let their children attend school and do their farm work afternoons after school and I on Saturdays. i The law requires that every | child between the ages of seven j and 16 must attend school every j day school is in session. MYF Sub-District Meeting Held In Robbinsville The Methodist Youth Sub-Dis trict held its monthly meeting in Robbinsville recently having an outdoor picnic. Towns represent ed were Murphy, Andrews and Robbinsville. The business meeting was held with Jean Penny, president of the Sub-District, presiding It was decided that each church give $5, to the Sub-District's Orphanage. Members chosen for the nominat ing committee for the new offi cers were: Murphy, Martha Axley; Robbinsville. Peggy Griffin; Mur phy. Ann Leatherwood; with Mrs. C. C. Washam of Andrews as ad visor. Andrews had the program for the evening with John Christy^ Jr., giving a talk. Pictures Shown At Meeting Of Lions Club Murphy Lions Club saw two motion pictures. "Atom Bomb Tests at Bikini" and "Southern High landers." a Ford Motor Company presentation, at the meeting held Tuesday evening in the dining room of the Methodist Church. R Bell announced a meet ing of the W'ildlife Club for Wednesday night Rev, W. T. Truett To Celebrate His 37th Anniversary The Rev. W. T. Truett, a distant relative of the late Dr Geo. W. Truett. this week celebrates his 37th year in the ministry. An alJ day singing will be held at Peacih tree Baptist Ohurch on Sunday, August 28. in celebration of his anniversary. Dinner will be serv ed on the grounds. All members are asked to bring their reading lists, signed by the mother or father. JOBS OPEN Applications are now being pro cessed by the North Carolina Merit System Office in Ourtiam for general clerical, stenographic cleri cal, statistical and accounting clerical examinations to be given on October 8. The closiiw date for receipt of applications for this examination if September 20.
